Terming chief minister Narendra Modi as one of the most leading and most culpable dramatis personae in the 2002 Gujarat riots, suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt lashed out at the CM in a letter he has written to the Nanavati and Mehta commission
on Friday.

Bhatt's missive is a reminder to the riot panel to provide him with the documents and records of the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) submitted by the state government. Bhatta mainly sought records of the SIB during the period from February 27 to September 17, 2002. These include vehicle movement register, call register, staff duty register at the control room. Bhatt also sought to direct the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to provide statements which was registered by him before it.

Bhatt, who wrote two letters on December 15 and 16, sought records as he is going to file a comprehensive affidavit over the misuse of public fund by chief minister Narendra Modi to undermine writ petition filed by renowned danseuse Mallika Sarabhai to bring justice for 2002 communal riot victims.

In his reminder letter of Friday, Bhatt stated, "the most important documents which could have clearly revealed the dubious role and criminal conduct of the then chief minister, other ministers, police officers and other individuals and organisations have not been brought to the notice of the Commission."

He further said, "I am aware of the said fact as many such highly incriminating documents were either authored by me or had come to my notice during my tenure as Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence, in-charge of the internal security in the year 2002."

Going further, Bhatt also stated that, "needless to emphasise, my genuine request naturally been opposed and will continue to be vehemently opposed by the state government that is headed by a chief minister who himself happens to be one of the most leading and most culpable dramatis personae of the Gujarat carnage of 2002 and subsequent cover-ups."
