Stung by the attack launched on party chief Sonia Gandhi by a television channel owned by belligerent member of parliament YS Jaganmohan Reddy, the Congress high command today sought a report from the Andhra Pradesh unit on the issue.

"The party has sought a report from the state unit on the issue (telecast of a programme on Sakshi television channel)," AICC media department chairman Janardhan Dwivedi said.

Sakshi, the 24-hour Telugu news channel owned by the Kadapa MP, had launched a frontal attack on Gandhi as well as the organisation in a one-hour programme yesterday.

The television channel ran an hour-long special programme on Friday and yesterday targeting Gandhi's leadership and "rapid degeneration" of the party under her.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also targeted along with the "coterie around Sonia" for the "sorry state of affairs in Congress."

Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said a view on the issue would be taken once the report is received from the state unit.

Party sources said there was no possibility of immediate action against Jaganmohan on the issue.

"Though there is an understanding that it (the telecast of the programme) was done at the behest of Jagan, but the party would not like to act in haste as he has not said anything himself," a senior party leader said.

He said the party has to be "technially correct".

The 38-year-old son of the late chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had defied the party high command and continued with his controversial Odarpu yatra. He had also been criticising the K Rosaiah-led government in Andhra Pradesh.

Ever since Jagan was denied the chief minister's post after his father Reddy's death, Sakshi newspaper and television channel have been running stories severely criticising Andhra Pradesh chief minister K Rosaiah and his government's policies.
