The appointment of retired justice HS Bedi by the Supreme Court had given rise to expectations of setting the ball rolling in investigations of 21 fake encounters that took place in the state from 2002 to 2006. However, in reality, the encounter cases being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are struggling to reach a definite conclusion.

According to officials, even though probe into Sohrabuddin Shaikh, Tulsiram Prajapati and Ishrat Jahan fake encounter cases are lagging, the team probing the Sadik Jamal fake encounter case has made some headway in the case and may soon make an arrest.

The Sadik Jamal fake encounter case is being investigated by the CBI since the last few months and statements of several officers have been recorded since then. A source close to the development told DNA that a cop accused in the Sadik Jamal encounter case could soon be arrested. “The police have got substantial evidences to summon the cop and even arrest him,” the source said.

Without naming the official, the source further said that the cop, who may soon be arrested by the central agency in connection with the Sadik encounter, has been trying hard to evade arrest. The source further corroborated that once the first arrest is made, all other important arrests will follow soon.

However, even as Sadik case probe is gaining momentum, investigators are struggling to proceed with the other fake encounter cases. Another source, familiar with the investigation, said that the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case is still at a primary stage and will require more time to even summon anyone, while the investigation in the Sohrabuddin encounter case seems to have reached a dead end.

Sources further said that the probe in the Sohrabuddin encounter case is almost over, with only last actions required to be taken. The investigators, however, are allegedly facing hurdles in bringing the investigation to a conclusion.

“Several supervising officers and joint director have been shifted or changed in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter case, which have derailed the investigation process for quite a long time,” the source added.
