Almost six months after a fresh FIR was filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Sadik Jamal encounter case, there was finally some progress in the investigation on Wednesday.

The CBI conducted a reconstruction of the crime scene near Galaxy cinema in Naroda with the assistance of a team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), New Delhi.

The five policemen who carried out the actual encounter took part in the crime scene reconstruction. These include JG Parmar (retired DySP), JG Gohil (PI), KM Vaghela (DySP, Gandhinagar) and two police constables. They are among the several police officers suspected of involvement in the encounter.

Two CBI officers, including deputy SP Binay Kumar, were also present during the reconstruction that took place from around 3 pm to 6 pm on Wednesday. The CFSL team took measurements, and jotted down the points from where Jamal had allegedly fired at the police and the points from where the police had fired at him.

This was done to establish the exact position of Jamal and the officers who had reportedly shot at him.

The CFSL team is expected to submit its report in the next 15 days. "Scientific analysis will reveal on its own the exact position of the accused policemen. It will be then be possible to verify the claims they had made after the encounter," a source close to the development said.

Sources further said that the CBI may also investigate the role of IPS officer Rajendra Kumar who was then joint director, central IB, in Gandhinagar. Kumar, who is currently posted in Delhi, has been named as an accused in the fresh complaint submitted to the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) by Sadik's brother, Shabir Mehtar. Shabir has alleged that the IB officer had fed false intelligence inputs at the behest of some political leaders and had also circulated the inputs in Mumbai, Delhi and Gujarat, to get Sadik killed.

Sadik Jamal Mehtar was killed near Galaxy cinema in the Naroda area of Ahmedabad on January 13, 2003, by sleuths of the Ahmedabad crime branch.
