Come December and you can enjoy leisurely strolls on beautiful stretches of walkway along the Sabarmati riverfront on either bank of the river. Two of these stretches of walkway are on the western bank and one on the eastern bank. The three stretches taken together measure 3.5 km in length and are now close to completion.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to gift the walkway to the residents as part of the Kankaria carnival in December this year.

“The walkway between Subhash bridge and Dadhichi Rishi bridge on the eastern bank and the two on the western bank of the river (between Gandhi bridge and Nehru Bridge and between Ambedkar Bridge and Vasana Barage) will be inaugurated during the Kankaria carnival,” said Asit Vora, mayor of Ahmedabad.

He further said that every year the AMC plans the groundbreaking ceremony or inauguration of one public utility project or another as part of the Kankaria carnival. This year, the inauguration of the walkway will be part of the carnival, he said.

The officials of Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) have been asked to complete the work on these stretches at the earliest. The work of tree plantation has already been completed and the tender for decorative lighting has also been floated. The civic body has also started work on roads along the river bank. The walkway is expected to be popular among residents of Ahmedabad who could use it for jogging or simply for some recreation.

Currently, the water in the river is not so clean because of the drain water flowing into the river from different residential areas as also the waste thrown by residents for religious reasons. However, the civic body is planning to install interceptors on both sides of the river to maintain water quality.

Sources said that the civic body also plans to fix iron nets along the bridges to stop residents from throwing garbage into the river.

"Moreover, security personnel may be posted on the bridges who will be authorized to penalise people caught throwing garbage in the river," a source said. Because of the protest from slum-dwellers living on the Sabarmati riverbank, the task of building the retaining wall along a long stretch of the eastern bank is still to be completed. Sources said the work on the wall is not likely to start until the slums are removed.
