More than 60% voting was recorded in the district and taluka panchayat and municipality elections in the state on Thursday. Officials said that barring a few minor incidents of violence, the polling was by and large peaceful.

Counting of votes will take place on Saturday, and the results will be known the same day.

Data from the state election commission indicates that while 55% to 60 % voting was reported in district and taluka panchayat elections, 60% to 65% voting was reported in the municipalities.

In Ahmedabad district, an average 64% voting was reported in the10 taluka panchayats, while the two municipalities of Dholaka and Viramgam registered about 62% and 65% voting respectively.

According to officials, 24 district panchayats, 208 taluka panchayats and 53 municipalities across the state went to polls on Thursday. The elections were held amid tight security arrangements.

Polling was mostly incident-free in and around Ahmedabad district too. One trend observed during the day was that voting was higher in rural areas as compared to semi-urban and urban areas.
Unlike the recent municipal corporation elections where voting was lackluster till the last hour, most places where voting took place on Thursday witnessed a steady flow of voters right from 8 am, when the voting started.

At many places, 12-15% voters had cast their votes in the first two hours itself. The pace of voting picked up further as the day progressed. At some places, the electronic voting machines (EVMs) had to be changed owing to technical problems.

Out of 60,000 EVMs installed across the state, 30 were replaced. There will be re-polling at booth no. 13/22 of ward no.
