Does the idea of taking a walk along the bank of the Sabarmati scare you because of stinking water? Have patience! Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is coming up with the Sabarmati Cleaning Project in line with the Ganga and the Yamuna Cleaning Projects.
The civic body plans to spend around Rs960 crore to clean up the river that flows through the heart of the city.

Under the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP), AMC is planning cleaning of the Sabarmati with a view to minimise pollution from various sources of the river and from the Riverfront development project. The AMC standing committee passed a proposal to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) in this regard at its meeting on Thursday, which will be sent to the state government for approval, which in turn will forward it to the central government.

Out of a total project cost of Rs960 crore, the civic body will spend Rs281 crore (30%), while the central government will contribute the rest.  The project deadline is fixed at 3 to 5 years. The Sabarmati is one of 17 rivers included in NRCP.

The aim of the project is abatement of pollution from the Sabarmati and all the related works such as setting up drainage pumping stations, interceptors, replacing existing drainage lines, said Tarun Lad, special city engineer of AMC.

The project will also include setting up exhibition of old water pumps at Pirana.

Besides this, the project will also include power generation using gas and up-gradation of lagoon type Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) in the city.
