Rs79 crore paid as relief for martyr cops' families in Jammu & Kashmir

The families of police martyrs get a relief package of Rs13.50 lakh each while those who die in harness, because of accident or natural causes, are given Rs8.50 lakh each.

The state police has disbursed Rs79 crore as relief to next of kins of 1,693 cops killed during anti-militancy operations in the last ten years.
    
"During the last decade, Rs79 crore has been paid to benefit 1,693 families of deceased police personnel out of the Special Contributory Police Welfare Fund (SCPWF) in Jammu and Kashmir," DGP Kuldeep Khoda told a meeting of the department here today.
    
The families of police martyrs get a relief package of Rs13.50 lakh each while those who die in harness, because of accident or natural causes, are given Rs8.50 lakh each.
    
This includes Rs6 lakh paid from SCPW Fund and additional Rs2.50 lakh as insurance claim. The families of martyrs also get an additional Rs5 lakh as ex-gratia from the government.
    
After eruption of militancy during late 1980's, the amount paid to the families was doubled from Rs50,000 to Rs1 lakh. The relief was further increased to Rs2 lakh in 1994, Rs4 lakh in 2001 and Rs6 Lakh in 2003.
