After DNA reported that the Air Traffic Control (ATC) building at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport is plagued by rats, the authorities have swung into action and started taking preventive measures to tackle the menace.

Sources at the airport said that the director of the airport, Anuj Agrawal, has given order to purchase room fresheners for the ATC building. An electronic room freshener has also been installed in the ATC building to get rid of the foul smell emanating from the dead rats.

However, when asked about the measures that the authorities are taking to control rats, all Agrawal said was, "I would not like to give specific details of the preventive measures that we are taking. But we are following the regular measures."

According to sources, the ATC may face major trouble in future because of the rats. If the sources are to be believed, the main reason behind the menace is the canteen which is adjacent to the ATC building. The availability of edibles makes it a perfect place for the rats to breed and take shelter. Besides, there is a garbage container in front of the building that feeds the rats.

Further, the ATC tower is also thronged by dozens of pigeons which are clearly visible in day time while during night they take shelter inside the tower. At any given time, the tower is full of pigeon's droppings. "The aircraft safety is the biggest responsibility of the ATC but unfortunately the authorities concerned have been neglecting its much-needed infrastructure," said a source.
