Does the term 'intelligence operative' conjure up image of daring men undertaking risky information gathering work of vital importance ? If your answer is yes, then you are bang on target.

The only trouble is that the so-called intelligence operatives are working for people on the wrong side of the law. And these are the men who have made many of the daring loots on angadiyas possible.

The intelligence operatives collect information on angadiyas and pass on them to thieves and robbers. In return for the vital information they get a pre-determined share in the loot. This is how gunmen looting angadiya know about the money that the money that the angadiyas are carrying and the route that they are likely to take.

This new trend came to light following the recent arrest of five men from Kheda who are believed to have looted angadiyas. Of the five arrested one Shravan alias Sanju Chauhan had many times sold information about the angadiyas to other thieves. Those looking to rob an angadiya employee usually do it at a place that is determined by their intelligent operatives.

Police inspector, local crime branch, Kheda, VJ Jadeja told DNA that Sanju acted as an intelligence operative and tipped-off the gang about the whereabouts and routes taken by many angadiyas.

"Thanks to the information provided by him, the robbers could execute many such loots with precision," said Jadeja.

Sources said that looting an angadiya requires too much planning and inside information. This is because angadiya firms themselves are very secretive about who will carry the cash and which route will be taken.

A source in the police department said that the intelligence operatives commission is usually a percentage of the loot. "The percentage of commission is fixed before the loot is executed," said the source.

The source said the intelligence operative usually charges 30% of the total amount looted and his commission is immediately given after a successful operation. "The work of an intelligence operative includes giving details about the route that an angadiya employee carrying cash or diamonds is likely to take. He will also decide the best place to loot an angadiya," a police source said. The angadiaya personnel is usually identified, followed and then targeted by the intelligence operative.

The intelligence operatives can either be part of a gang or can work independently.

"The independent operators first identify the angadiyas.
