The city’s geography is set to change dramatically with the completion of Sabarmati riverfront development - with wide promenades to walk on, parks and garden to spend leisure time on, and a permanent exhibition hall to be set up.

After a suggestion from the chief minister Narendra Modi who recently visited the project site, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation bosses have started construction work of an exhibition hall for the riverfront project which is going to be a permanent structure on the reclaimed land.

The exhibition hall spreads over 2000 square metres under the Nehru Bridge and will display models, pictures and graphics of all features of Sabarmati riverfront project. If everything goes as planned the exhibition will be ready by January 14 before the Patangotsav-2010- kicks off.

“The construction work has started for the exhibition hall. The idea is to educate citizens and engineering students about the project. The exhibition hall will house replicas of the riverfront project with promenades, roads, areas where parks and gardens will come and stretches where commercial development is planned. This will give clarity to people about how development is planned under the project,” said a senior AMC official.

On the other hand, the move to set up a permanent exhibition is seen as a move to set a platform to market the riverfront project as the civil work will be completed by December. This might be incidental, but in the last couple of months Sabarmati riverfront project has been attracting a lot of attention.

To begin with, Modi for the first time after 2006 Patangotsav, visited the project site recently followed by a visit of 100 students from three engineering institutions and a high profile delegate from UK.

Local businessmen have also started taking interest as Gujarat chamber of commerce and industry has planned a visit to the Sabarmati riverfront project.

While it is also seen as preparation to market the project before auctioning of reclaimed land the AMC officials deny the move. They say, the exhibition hall and visit of delegation are only to increase understanding of the project.
