Rising Yamuna: Sheila Dikshit says prepared to tackle any eventuality

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit today said her government was prepared to tackle any eventuality arising out of the rising levels of Yamuna and has set up around 170 camps for people living in low-lying areas near the river.

The water level of Yamuna continued to flow above the danger level of 204.83 metres, prompting authorities to evacuate more people in East Delhi.

"The water level is rising, but we are prepared to tackle the situation. We have already set up around 170 camps and families have been removed there. Today, I will inspect the camps and see whether there is arrangement of enough food and shelter and other essentials," Dikshit told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

She said the families will be kept in camps till the situation normalises.

To a question on increasing traffic jams, she pointed out that rains are causing a problem and they are expected to continue for some more days. "Achchha hai ishwar ne das saal bad dilli ko barish diya hai (good that god has gifted (so much) rains to Delhi after 10 years," she quipped.

Heavy rains have been lashing the city for the last several days, causing difficulties in construction work ongoing for the Commonwealth Games.
