An elderly couple was assaulted by three youths on Monday night at their home in Ashoknagar society behind the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) centre in Ahmedabad.

The couple lives a short distance from the Satellite police station.

According to the police, three unidentified youths assaulted Dilip Kumar Dhar, 70, and his wife at their residence in Ashoknagar society at 9:30pm on Monday.

Police said the motive behind the attack was to rob the couple who live alone as their two sons work in the US.

Narrating their harrowing experience, Dhar said that a young man rang the doorbell of his house at around 9:30pm. He thought it must be a boy from the society who had come to collect money for the Navratri festival.

"We just had a glass of juice and were settling down to watch TV when that the doorbell rang. I didn't open it right away but took a peek from the window. I opened the door a little but soon realized that there was something wrong. Soon the three began to push at the door to open it," Dhar told DNA.

The attackers managed to force open the door and Dhar, who was trying to bolt the door from the inside, fell down on the floor and the assailants fell on top of him. His wife, who was inside the house, also came running.

Dhar said one of the attackers tried to gag him by putting his fist into his mouth. "But I gathered all my strength and began to kick them," he said. "My wife also came to my assistance and grabbed the head of one of the attackers but they pushed her to the sofa. She was injured in the incident."

The retired scientist said that it all happened within a few seconds. "After 6-7 minutes, I started shouting for help but nobody came," he said.

"Soon the dogs started barking fiercely and the attackers ran away." He said that after the attackers had run away, he called his neighbours and the police. The police have registered a case but, so far, have made no headway in their investigation.

Dhar came to Ahmedabad in 1980 as a scientist in the communication department of ISRO and settled in Ashoknagar four years later. He is originally from Kolkata.
