Those championing the cause of domestic help today demanded that residential complexes have an in-built code specifying that no residents employ child domestic servants and also mantain a record of all the domestic servants working in the residential complex.

"Such a system would prevent abuse of domestic servants and would ensure that children were not employed and exploited",
Geeta Menon, Stree Jagruti Samiti, told reporters today while presenting the case of a 20-year-old maid who had been rescued from abuse by her employers, by the Domestic Workers Rights Union, Sichrem, and Stree Jagruti Samiti.

Citing the example of Usha, who was employed by a software engineer working for a reputed firm and his wife who ran a popular children's library, she said the girl had been employed by the family through a placement agency in Delhi.

"I was beaten up,burnt with a hot iron, poked with scissors and scolded frequently", said the girl, a migrant, working with the family for two years. Usha was rescued thanks to proactive work of residents living in the building, says Geeta. However, the agency that placed her was yet to be traced.

There were estimated 12 placement agencies in the city, out of which only seven largely worked within the framework of regulations, she said.

The Domestic Workers Rights Union has demanded that such domestic help be protected and they be offered fair terms of employment. It said employers of the rescued maid were arrested and released on bail.
