Good news for city dwellers, who are reeling under acute water shortage for the past two weeks. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has assured that water cut will be lifted as per the schedule, ie, from June 12.

According to Tarun Lad, in-charge city engineer, the state government has updated the AMC about the ongoing work in Narmada canal.

"According to the reports, the work in the Narmada canal will be finished within few days. It will allow us to supply water to the people as per schedule," he said.

AMC has imposed a 16-day cut in water supplied to city dwellers, which started from May 28 and scheduled to end on June 12. The cut in supply was due to several repairing work being carried out by state government in canals supplying water to the city-based reservoirs from Kadana dam and Meshwo river.

On Wednesday, Lad received photographs of the work being carried out in the escape canal of the Meshwo river.

"The photos and reports suggest that the work is near completion, and we will be able to get water from the canal within few days time" assured Lad. The canal brings water to the Raska water reservoir from the adjoining main Narmada canal.

At present, Ahmedabad gets 200 million litres per day (MLD) from Raska, 200 MLD from Jaspur and 650 MLD from Kotarpur reservoir.

To boost the water supply in the new west zone, AMC has constructed 2 additional borewells of 75 MLD each. "Apart from that, we have also constructed 84 medium capacity borewells to meet the city's growing demand," Lad added.
