Telugu Desam Party MLA from Kovvuru in West Godavari district, TV Rama Rao, launched an indefinite hunger strike demanding that the false case of rape and murder 'foisted' on him be withdrawn immediately.

High drama preceded the MLA's programme with the city police arresting him in a bid to foil the hunger strike when he started it in front of the Ambedkars statue on the busy Tank Bund.

The other TDP MLAs present protested the police action and picked up an argument. However, Rama Rao was taken away to the nearby Gandhinagar police station and set free in the afternoon. Rama Rao then launched his inde Indira Park and vowed to continue it till the false case, in which he wat may be recalled that the West Godavari
police registered a case of rape that he was involved in the crime against a student in his nuector and the SP conducted an enquiry and concluded that all the studennd on the wall inside a room in the college hostel were nothing over the case to the Crime Investigation Department for further investigation.

The TDP MPs, MLAs and MLCs met chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday and demanded that the false case against their party MLA be withdrawn immediately. The chief minister, however, said the CID was probing into the case and hence the case could not be withdrawn.

Police arrested the TDP MPs, MLAs and MLCs when they sat on a sit-in (dharna) inside the CM's camp office decrying the chief minister's vindictive attitude. TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu joined the protest after the arrested leaders were shifted to a police station outside the city.

He took strong exception to the foisting of a false case against the Dalit MLA when nothing untoward had happened. "When all the girls of the college are safe and there is no trace of any crime, why should the case be continued? It is nothing but persecution, that too of a Dalit MLA," Chandrababu lashed out.

The Telugu Desam Party has decided to step up the agitation till justice was done. The CPM and the CPI have expressed solidarity with the TDP on the issue.
