The capital, known as one of the most unsafe cities for women, became a shade safer for the fair sex last year, going by Delhi Police statistics.

In 2009, rape cases have shown a decline of three per cent (452 against 466) and a whopping 94.25 per cent of the cases have been solved, the Delhi Police's annual report said.

As far as molestation cases were concerned, 532 cases were reported last year against 597 cases in 2008.

Another characteristic was the uneven distribution of the cases of crime against women.

The police station-wise break-up shows that no case of rape was reported in 35 police stations while 225 (50 per cent) were reported from 35 police stations out of which 33 fall outside the Ring Road. Eightyfive (50 per cent) police stations recorded 85 per cent of all rape cases.

Of the persons arrested on rape charges, 35 were relatives, 64 were friends, 212 were neighbours and 129 were other known persons.

In only 12 (3 per cent) rape cases, the crime committed was by a person unknown to the victim.

Eighty three per cent of the arrested were illiterate, school dropouts or have studied upto class 10th. 67 per cent of the accused were below 25 years and 68 per cent belonged to the lower economic strata.

The data on molestation cases show that in 47 per cent of the cases, neighbours were the accused, in four per cent friends, in six per cent relatives and in only five per cent of cases strangers were involved.

A total of 686 accused were arrested out of which 56 percent were illiterate or school dropouts.

Delhi police commissioner YS Dadwal said one of the initiatives which got a good measure of success was the setting up of the anti-obscene calls cell.

The cell has so far got 12,108 calls. Out of this, action has been taken to the satisfaction of the complainants in 11,625 cases.

"The action taken by this cell has gone a long way in nipping complaints of harassments in the bud," he said.

Apart from this, Delhi Police has also started a massive gender sensitisation campaign within the force.

The crime graph for senior citizens, however, saw a slight increase with 17 elders found murdered as compared to 15 in 2008.
