The post-mortem report of MBA student Ranbir Singh has shown that he had 28 injury marks on his body, only 10 of which are bullet marks. The report, out on Sunday, strengthens allegations that Ranbir, 24, was shot dead in a fake encounter by the Dehradun police last Friday.

Many are baffled by the silence of president Pratibha Patil, who was in Dehradun hours after the cold-blooded murder committed by policemen possibly coveting gallantry awards.

Two bullets were found lodged in Ranbir’s body. This means 18 of the injury marks were caused by something other than bullets. And that, sources said, means he was severely beaten up before the encounter; the bullet marks bear evidence that he was shot at point-blank range. The post-mortem report does point to torture, which means Ranbir was in police custody much before the so-called encounter.

The body was cremated in Bagpat, Meerut, with relatives and friends demanding justice. Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhariyal said he had ordered a CID (criminal investigation department, crime branch) inquiry.

Ranbir’s parents have demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Ranbir’s father Ravindra, an ex-army man who had served in the Kargirl war, said, “I know what these bullet wounds mean. I want justice for my son. I have been threatened by the police, who want me to be quiet about my son’s brutal murder.”

“My brother was innocent. The guilty will have to pay for this injustice,” said Ravindra’s son Sachin Chaudhary. Sunil Verma, a witness, has verified that the ‘encounter’ was murder in cold blood. “I saw the police beat up that boy before shoving him into a jeep.
I saw a constable hitting him behind his head with a rifle butt. I know the police are ready to harass me now, and that worries me,” Verma said. The Dehradun police stuck to their version.  “It was not a fake encounter. Both sides were firing, which lead to multiple bullet wounds,” a senior police official said.
