A fashion show of designer clothes made from khadi will be held in Rajkot on Sunday. Its main attraction will be two theme-based collections promoting environmental awareness, and carrying messages and rare pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, respectively.

Prominent politicians, models and other celebrities will walk the ramp attired in casual, corporate and bridal wear made from khadi. This is the second time Rajkot is hosting a fashion show to promote khadi clothing among youth. Gujarat governor, Dr Kamala, will inaugurate the pageant which will be attended by eminent people from different walks of life.

The show named, 'Khadi Vastra Paridhan Utsav', is being organised jointly by Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Saurashtra Rachnatmak Samiti and Friends Group, an organisation involved in youth and welfare activities. The clothes have been designed by students of the Institute of Fashion and Jewellery Design, Rajkot.

"The main purpose of the show is to promote an enthusiasm for khadi clothes among youths. We want to dispel the perception that khadi is meant only for politicians and elderly people," said Suresh Parekh, secretary of Friends Group.

Among the prominent BJP and Congress leaders expected to take part in the fashion show are Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Rupani, MLA Bhanu Babaria and Rajkot Congress leader Kashmira Nathvani. They will be joined on the ramp by professional models from Mumbai.

"More than 80 different kinds of designer clothes will be exhibited at the show. The main attractions of the pageant will be clothes bearing pictures and messages of Mahatma Gandhi, and 'green' khadi-wear with messages about the hazards of global warming," Parekh said.

"Ultimately, Khadi is something purely Indian and it is very comfortable to wear in summer. We have khadi clothing that officials of the corporate world can wear to office as also designer wear for youths and women which can be worn on any occasion," he added.

Prominent choreographer Keyur Desai has been hired for the dance show which will be part of the pageant.

"I have created dance sequences using props that go with the five different themes of the show," said Desai who was hired for two similar shows organized in Rajkot and Surat earlier.

Well-known professional models who have participated in the Femina Miss India and other beauty contests, will be coming to the city to take part in the fashion pageant.
