Although June 20 is the official date for monsoon to hit the city, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is still continuing with the work related to the pre-monsoon action plan. According to the deadline set by the civic body, all the work related to the pre-monsoon action plan was slated to be completed by June 15.

As per the plan, AMC was supposed to undertake activities like cleaning of drainage lines and catch pits, build a storm water network in the affected areas from May 4 to June 15.

However, the monsoon related work is still continuing in many parts of the city. Many residents are worried at the snail-pace of the work being done for the storm water network as well as drainage lines across the city.

The works are being done in areas like Shrinand Nagar-V near Makarba village, under the Shahibaug railway overbridge, on Relief road, near Shamsherbaug of Gomtipur, and opposite Rami ni Chali at Rakhial.

Kalupur corporator Krushnavadan Brahmbhatt said that AMC has missed the 45 day deadline to finish the drainage work near the police station on Relief road. "The road is closed since last one and half month. The work was expected to finish before June 15, but is still continuing," said Brahmbhatt.

Surprisingly, AMC has clearly made an announcement on May 4 that no department will dig up roads after June 15 and if any road has already been dug up, then it will have to be repaired before June 15.

"AMC has miserably failed in following its own order, issued by the commissioner and mayor. Why can't they plan in advance?" asked Iqbal Shaikh, corporator from Gomtipur.

Similarly, corporator from Sarkhej ward Haji Mirza Baig questions the manner in which the work being done near Shrinanad Nagar-V.

"The proposal to lay drainage pipeline in this area is an old one. So what took them so long to implement it? What will happen when it rains and the area will be submerged?" asked Haji Mirza.
