Railway services were suspended in Kashmir today following violent protests after a 70-year-old man was run over by a train in Baramulla district.

Ghulam Qadir Hajam was crossing the railway line at Delina, 40 kms from here, when he was hit by the train. He died on the spot, the police said.

The train, which runs on the Kazigund-Baramulla route, was returning to Baramulla from Hamray village of Pattan when a group of people blocked the railway track. The police used batons to disperse the protesters. However, the train service was suspended for the day in view of the tense situation, officials said.

Protesters pelted stones on the police and the paramilitary forces at various places in Srinagar, Baramulla and Anantnag districts but there was no report of any casuality.
