Not only are BJP MPs unhappy with the Budget proposals, some Cong MPs too are disgruntled.
BJP MPs from the state are unhappy with the railway budget while a majority of Gujarat’s Congress MPs have welcomed it. BJP MP from Ahmedabad (east), Harin Pathak, said he was surprised that Gujarat’s expectations had not been met when the railway minister and the minister of state for railways are both Gujarati.
“The demand to shift the Western Railway headquarters from Mumbai to Ahmedabad has not been considered. There is no word about the promise made in the previous budget about making Ahmedabad railway station a world class station. Freight charges have not been cut,” Pathak said.
However, Congress MP from Jamnagar, Vikram Madam, sounded upbeat about the budget. Speaking to DNA over the phone, he said the railway budget has proposed four new trains for Jamnagar.
“Our demand that the Okha-Rajkot line be doubled has been fulfiled. The railway budget has also given Gujarat a coach factory which will come up in Kutch. I am very happy with the budget,” he said.
BJP MP from Ahmedabad (west) Dr Kirit Solanki said they had demanded railway connections to all the ports of the state but this demand has not been conceded. “Except for a coach factory at Kutch, Gujarat has not received much,” Solanki said.
Surprisingly, Congress MP Kunvarji Bavalia is not happy with the railway budget.
“Congress MPs’ demands for Saurashtra region have not been fulfiled. We had demanded that some trains should be extended to Somnath, Veraval and Dwarka but this has not been considered. We had also demanded a direct train from Rajkot to Delhi via Viramgam and Mehsana. This too has not been conceded,” Bavalia said.
