A rickety house collapsed on Wednesday in Raikhad area of the city claiming one life.

The incident took place in the morning when a weak slab of the shaky structure, which two labourers were trying to raze, fell on one and killed him on the spot.

Ahmedabad's estate department officials and fire brigade rushed to the spot but could not save the labourer who got buried inside the debris after the slab fell on him.

One Paresh Dave, who had bought the house, was now building a new structure on the adjoining plot for which he has already received estate department and town development department's approval, an AMC official said.

The house was to be demolished as that area had been represented as an open space in the plans submitted to the department, added the official.

Laxman Banker, 51, the labourer who was killed in the incident was a resident of Kotraj village.

The officials of civic body's estate department managed to dig out Banker's body trapped under the debris and later rushed to VS Hospital only to declare him dead on arrival.

The other labourer present on the site escaped unhurt as he was standing a little away from the spot where the slab fell.

A resident of the locality, Nailesh Modi said, "We had warned the owner of the property about the condition of the old building-that it would fall anytime soon. The owner had brought two labourers to demolish the property and that is when the incident happened."

Meanwhile the civic body has served a notice to the owner for demolishing the other unsafe structure of the house.
Police have lodged a complaint of accidental death.
