The BJP today said Rahul Gandhi was allowed by the Mayawati government to visit agitating farmers in Greater Noida as the Congress and BSP are "hand in glove" and demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh take strict action against the "ineffective" Mayawati government.

Former BJP President Rajnath Singh, who has been spearheading his party's campaign for the rights of farmers of Bhatta Parsaul village of Greater Noida, stopped short of demanding imposition of president's rule in the state.

"Uttar Pradesh is burning. Instead of putting off the flames, Congress is fanning them. Two Congress general secretaries Rahul Gandhi and Digvijay Singh are sitting on dharna at Parsaul....The UP government is creating fear... Mayawati has no right to continue. She should resign," Singh said told reporters.

Rajnath Singh and other leaders were arrested yesterday when they tried to reach the village.

Singh, who will sit on a 24-hour hunger strike tomorrow, appealed to the prime minister and Congress President Sonia Gandhi that there should be no "nautanki (theatrics)" over the cause of farmers and both Congress leaders should be called back.

"The situation in the state is going from bad to worse under the BSP government. There is rampant corruption. Democratic demonstrations by farmers and others for their cause is being suppressed through bullets and batons," he said.

He rued that the prime minister was not taking any "effective steps".

"Does the Constitution stop him (PM) from taking effective steps (against the Mayawati government)?" he asked.

Asked if he was demanding imposition of president's rule in UP, Rajnath Singh said it was for the people and media to interpret what he meant.

He asked the Centre to think seriously about this issue.

"Congress and BSP are hand in glove on this issue. This was seen earlier in the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee. On the issue of corruption, both SP and BSP have joined hands with the Congress," he said.
