Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today said the state aims to generate 1,500 MW of power by running turbines on canal water with the use of Chinese technology.

"We are exploring the idea of using Chinese technology in running turbines on state's canal water and I along with a delegation will visit China next month to explore this technology for this project," Badal said.

Badal said special turbines would be submerged in the canals which will produce power. He invited private entrepreneurs to become partner in this project.

The deputy chief minister claimed that 11,000 MW of thermal power plants in the state were under construction.

"Once these plants are complete, the state will become surplus in the power generation," he said.
