Pune Congress leaders ask Rahul Gandhi to beef up youth organisations

Anxious over the increasing influence of its alliance partner and main rival, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), city Congress leaders on Saturday met party general secretary Rahul Gandhi at Lohegaon airport and asked him to increase the number of officer bearers of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and the National Student’s Union of India (NSUI) to accommodate more party workers.

On his way to Delhi after touring drought-affected areas in Satara district on Saturday morning, Rahul stopped at the Lohegaon airport for a few minutes before boarding the chartered flight to the national capital.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan was accompanying Rahul Gandhi on his tour.

The chopper carrying Rahul and Chavan landed at the airport at around 11.45 am and before boarding his chartered plane at around 12.15 pm, he held talks with the delegation, comprising deputy mayor Deepak Mankar, MLC Mohan Joshi, city Congress chief Abhay Chhajed, corporator Avinash Bagwe and Rohit Tilak.

After meeting Rahul Gandhi at the airport, Mankar told DNA, “We brought it to the notice of our leader that accommodating more party workers in the Youth Congress and the NSUI is necessary to encourage and attract more youth towards the party.”

“The strength of office bearers in both organisations is five each and the number should be increased. Rahul Gandhi, who is heading both organisations, has assured us that he would think over it,” he said.

The delegation Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan was accompanying Rahul Gandhi on his tour.apprised him about the posts lying vacant for the past many years in various state corporations which are in the kitty of the Congress and requested him to appoint party workers in these corporations to boost the confidence of the workers.

“On appointment of party workers in corporations, Rahul Gandhi asked the chief minister to take the decision,” Joshi said.
