Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad: A student of Kripi Primary Teachers College (PTC) was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her hostel in Gayatri Vidyalaya Compound in Odhav on Monday morning. The 18-year-old, who was identified as Shabnam Chokandawala, was found dead on the floor in her room. A rope was tied around her neck.

According to sources, Shabnam had been a student of the PTC college for the last four months. She belonged to Nabirpur village in Bharuch. The incident came to light when her roommates Anandi Vyas and Anjana returned from a prayer meeting.

According to sources, the duo had asked the victim to come along with them for the prayer meeting. She apparently refused as she was suffering from stomach ache.

Her roommates have told the police that Shabnam slept as they left for the prayer meeting. But when they returned they found Shabnam lying on the floor with a yellow rope tied around her neck. The roommates soon informed the college principal Rekha Vyas. They also called for 108 emergency Service.

The Odhav police were also informed of the incident. Odhav police inspector MS Sindha said it appears to be a case of suicide.

"A case of suicide has been registered and we are investigating the matter. We have not talked to the parents yet. So we are not sure of anything," said Sindha.

No suicide note was found at the place of the incident.

According to Vyas, Shabnam was an intelligent student and always stood first in her class. "She had no bad habits and I don't know why she took the extreme step," said Vyas. The victim's father Salim, her mother and two sisters had come to visit her a few days ago and even had breakfast with her.

"We never had any problems with her. She was a very active student and she often talked to me if she was bothered about anything. I don't know why she took the extreme step," said Salim.

The Forensic Science Laboratory said that the rope around her neck was tied very tightly and she died of suffocation. Four grains of wheat coloured in kumkum (used in religious ceremonies) were found from her bag.
