In protest of the hooch tragedy, residents of Odhav and Amraiwadi areas observed a bandh on Thursday.

Most shops and commercial centres in these areas remained closed on the day to protest the inefficiency of the government and the police in averting the tragedy, which has so far claimed the lives of over a hundred people.

While protesting, residents of Viratnagar and  Odhav burnt effigies of home minister Amit Shah. The protest, which began from Odhav, gradually spread to Ramrajya Ringroad in Amraiwadi.

The mob turned so furious that it started pelting stones on AMTS buses; at least 11 buses were damaged in the incident. While three buses were attacked in Uttamnagar in Odhav, stones were pelted at one bus in Viratnagar, three at Rajendrapark and one of a private travel company. The police arrested 16 protestors from Odhav while 36 were nabbed from Amraiwadi.

The situation worsened to such an extent that the police personnel entered the houses of residents of Ramrajyanagar and lathicharged children, women and even senior citizens.

A resident of the area told DNA, "We had approached the police several time to register complaints, but they never took any action. Now, instead of nabbing goons, they are using lathis on innocent citizens."

Kankuben Solanki, whose son has become paralysed after consuming the hooch, said, "What is the government doing? We don't even have enough to eat or cover ourselves with. My son was the sole bread winner of our family; he earned Rs3,000 a month. Now that he is paralysed, how will we survive? I think home minister Amit Shah should resign."

Talking to DNA, Gordhan Zadaphia, president of Maha Gujarat Janata Party, said that the bandh was successful in all the parts of the city, and will continue till Amit Shah resigns from his post
