The monthly board meeting of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) held on Friday ended in a chaos as the main opposition party Congress raised a host of issues such as dog menace, hike in property tax due to revision in jantri in certain areas, excessive payment made to contractors under the revised estimates of some projects and inadequate water supply in new west zone.  It also alleged that the ruling party is not replying to the questions asked by the corporators.

While raising the issue of dog menace, Surendra Baxi, leader of opposition, said, “As per the official figures, AMC had received 41,958 complaints of dog menace in last 3 years, out of which 36,712 complaints were solved. However, only 15,363 dogs were captured and sterilised during these years by the Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD). If one dog per complaint would have been sterilised, the number of sterilised dogs would have been very high.”

Alleging that lack of proper planning on part of administration has led to
excessive payment of Rs23.58 crore under the revised estimate for 18 projects, Baxi said, “The administration must conduct proper study of the project and visit the location before forwarding the proposal before the respective committee, so that question of revised does not arise.”

The Congress also raised the issue of public harassment due to project work. At many places in the city, the ongoing projects have become hurdles in using basic amenities such as water and drainage. Himmatsinh Patel, former mayor, said that the contractor had blocked drainage lines near Soni ni Chal in Bapunagar area leading to drainage overflow.

Moreover, the project works should be completed within stipulated time , he added. The Congress also raised the issue of recovery of water charges from the areas that were included in AMC in 2007 but not getting water supply from AMC so far. The areas had been covered under water zone of AMC, but water was not supplied even after many representations, said Hasankhan Pathan, a Congress corporator from Dariapur.

The hike in the property tax as result of implementation of new jantri also became the bone of contention during the zero hour of the meeting.
