Prohibition:this village has own law

Village head (sarpanch) AS Thakor said a penalty of Rs1,000 is imposed on those consuming liquor while a penalty of Rs5,000 is slapped on those who manufacture it.

A village in the state has taken lead in effectively implementing prohibition laws. Kanesara village of Patan taluka in north Gujarat has not only prescribed financial penalties for consuming liquor but the person caught drinking is required to stay put on a tree for 24 hours.

Village head (sarpanch) AS Thakor said a penalty of Rs1,000 is imposed on those consuming liquor while a penalty of Rs5,000 is slapped on those who manufacture it. A penalty of Rs1,000 is also imposed on a drunken person entering the village as a guest.

In addition to penalty, the person consuming liquor is asked to spend 24 hours on a tree, Thakor said. Manaji Thakor, a youth  penalised for consuming liquor pleaded with the sarpanch and others in the village to allow him to get down from tree on Saturday vowing never to consume liquor hereafter, he said.

Manjuben Thakor, a woman from the village, expressed her happiness over such efforts, saying it has helped in the economic prosperity of the people.
