In a shocking incident, a prisoner at Kamrej sub-jail consumed poison in his barrack on Wednesday morning.

The prisoner, who was immediately admitted to New Civil hospital died during treatment on Thursday. The incident shocked cops and jail officials as there was no explanation how did poison reach inside the jail.

According to information, Deva Bharwad, a resident of Kamrej and at present in judicial custody at Kamrej sub-jail, committed suicide by consuming poison in his barrack on Wednesday morning.

Bharwad was lying unconscious in the barrack when a co-prisoner noticed him and informed the jail authorities. They took Bharwad to New Civil hospital, where he died early on Thursday morning. During preliminary investigation, it was revealed that
Bharwad had consumed phosphorous, which led to his death. To learn about the exact reasons of the death, a post-mortem has been ordered.

The suicide shocked jail authorities and even police officials at Kamrej, who began investigating how Bharwad got access to phosphorous. Sources said that cops initiated search within the jail and even interrogated some jail staff and prisoners.

Sources said that Bharwad, who worked as a loan agent, had helped Sanjay Patel, one of his friends, to get a loan of Rs5 lakh from a private financier. Sanjay availed the loan by mortgaging his 15 bigha of land at Kamrej, but did not repay a single rupee and fled away.

When creditors could not find Sanjay, they got Bharwad and his brother Jeetu arrested by implicating them in a kidnapping case. The cops also arrested the creditors, but later released them.

"Bharwad was not treated properly in the jail by the authorities and were not providing judicial aid. Desperate by this, Bharwad consumed poison. We will definitely seek legal redress to provide justice to my brother," Rupa Bharwad, cousin of Bharwad, said.

Despite several attempts, no officials from Kamrej sub-jail were available for comment.
