Pre-1953 status to Jammu & Kashmir will prove problematic, says Jagmohan

Any move to return Jammu and Kashmir to its pre-1953 status in the name of greater autonomy will prove to be problematic for the country, former state governor Jagmohan claimed today.

"After 1953, various sections of governance were integrated with Jammu and Kashmir. If the state is provided with autonomy of the pre-1953 status, who will fund the government, how will people get their salaries and who will audit the accounts," Jagmohan said here.

He said the Centre cannot keep funding the Jammu and Kashmir government if autonomy was provided as it will have little control over the decisions of the state government. 

"The demand for autonomy is the charter of Jammu and Kashmir's disintegration from India. It will lead to more problems as such demands will increase from other quarters," he said.

The former union minister was addressing a gathering at the launch of a book 'Vyathit Jammu and Kashmir'. 

He claimed that as governor, when he tried to enforce the rule of law in the state, he was accused of violating human rights by various rights organisations, including the PUCL.

"The PUCL report was quoted by various international bodies to slam me," he recalled. He said members of the rights group made allegations which lacked authenticated documents.
