Even as campaigning for the last phase of the West Bengal elections ended on Sunday and the state waits for the results, high-profile debutante Abhijit Mukherjee appeared unperturbed and confident of victory.

“I am sure I would win because during the campaigning I realised that voters had faith in me. They also trusted the political change which both Trinamool Congress and Congress are talking about,’’ Abhijit told DNA.

Abhijit is son of Union finance minister and senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee. He is a mechanical engineer from Jadavpur University. A former SAIL employee, Abhijit is contesting from Nalhati assembly constituency in Bribhum, a stronghold of the Forward Bloc and to which elections were held on April 23.
He said winning his first election would not be without the burden that comes with success.  “(After victory) I have to straight away start with development activities. The district which happens to be my home is not developed,’’ he said, adding it lacks infrastructure and avenues for employment generation. “I have to work very hard to develop the district and my constituency.”

However, he said bringing development to a backward region would not be easy. “We do not know exactly how much ruined is the economy, and, in case it is, I would suggest to the finance minister to implement strong fiscal measures to fix it. We need to get funds for carrying out development,’’ he said.
