You can't blame Kashi Raval, 58, a patient of Sheth Vadilal Sarabhai Hospital for believing that she is part of a 'power' game that is hell bent on disrupting her operation.

Raval, who came all the way from Mehsana, to have a hollis cystectomy (a procedure to remove gallstones) has had her surgery interrupted twice by 'powers' beyond her control. What is worse is that the 'powers' chose to interrupt every time she was put on the operation table.

Raval was to be operated on Saturday when a short circuit set the catheterization laboratory (cath lab) on fire. Raval, who had been administered anesthesia and was on the operation table with five punctures in her stomach, had to be rescued to safety as thick smoke enveloped the operation theatre. Needless to say, Raval's surgery was called off.

Doctors then decided to operate her on Monday. This time when the doctors were about to start the procedure, the power went off.

"On Monday, just when the doctors were ready to begin with the operation, the electricity in the hospital went off. Thankfully, the hospital had generators and the doctors finally carried out the procedure. Although they did not use the laparoscopy method and instead went for traditional surgery," said a senior medical staff of the hospital.

Kashiben's son Sailesh Raval, however, said that because of electricity failure in the main operation theatre of the hospital they requested doctors to go ahead with the operation in the traditional way.

Shailesh was all praise for the doctor for keeping their nerve during the fire incident. "During the fire, the doctors at the hospital did not abandon my mother and run for their lives. They ensured that she was taken to safety," he said. He, however, said that they had to shell out additional Rs6,000 as she had to be treated for inhaling smoke. "We hope we get some discount," said Sailesh.
