New Delhi: Hundreds of passengers flew into a state of panic when the Delhi Metro train they were travelling in grinded to a halt between the Dwarka-Yamuna Bank line due to power failure. The train was stuck for two hours.

The incident happened at 3:25 pm between the RK Ashram Marg and the Rajiv Chowk metro station. "The signals couldn't work because of power failure and the train was halted on a slip track," said a police officer. The passengers were taken out through the emergency doors. Some people were taken to hospital, but we don't know the exact number," a police officer said.

According to officials, some passengers opened the emergency gates on the train's sides and started walking towards both the stations. This caused problems in the rescue operations. The train coming just behind the stalled train was cleared of passengers at Rajiv Chowk station and used to rescue those stranded," said a Delhi Metro official.
After about 25 minutes, the stalled train was coupled with the rescue train and taken to the Yamuna Bank Depot for maintenance. During this time, three short loop train services were provided between the Dwarka sector 9 and Karol Bagh stations. Train services returned to normal after an hour and forty minutes.

"Many passengers created problems for us by not listening to the train operator. He made repeated announcements to keep calm but some people forced open the emergency door," said DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) had to shut down the Rajiv Chowk Metro station for a while.

"We shut the doors to the entrance after a crowd of people gathered around the station. There was big crowd and it could have become a stampede, so we shut the gates to manage the crowd," said a CISF official. Delhi Metro authorities are yet to say what caused the power breakdown.
