Dubbing Orissa government as a 'law breaker', the opposition Congress today demanded that Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik step down on moral ground for violation of the forest rights act, 2006 in land acquisition for Posco's project.
"The government headed by Naveen Patnaik has been found withholding relevant information and documents regarding implementation of the forest rights act. Therefore, he has no moral right to continue in the office," Congress chief whip Prasad Harichandan said.
The government, he alleged, did not deliberately furnish documents with the ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) on the forest rights act when recommending diversion of forest land for Posco's mega steel plant in Jagatsinghpur district at an investment of Rs51,000 crore.
Harichandan said that the government also did not submit the Gram Sabha resolution which was against diversion of forest land.
The Congress MLAs have been sitting on dharna near Mahatma Gandhi's statue in the assembly premises since July 17 demanding resignation of two ministers allegedly involved in the multi-crore linkage coal scam.
"The government which took oath to implement rule of the law, has been caught on wrong the foot. Therefore, it must go," the leader of the opposition Bhupinder Singh said.
BJP legislator party leader KV Singhdeo alleged that the state government had been soft towards Vadanta, Posco and mines owners by violating the law.
Meanwhile, welcoming the Centre's direction to halt work at Posco's project site, the state unit of the CPI demanded stringent action against officials who violated the FRA.
