EC closes Khurshid chapter
New Delhi: Accepting the regrets expressed by Union law minister Salman Khurshid, the Election Commission has decided to close the chapter. It had earlier pulled up the minister for breaching the model code of conduct when he persisted with his quota promise to Muslims in UP. Prime minister Manmohan Singh had asked Khurshid to submit an unqualified apology to the EC. Following this, he sent a letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner saying, “I bow to the wisdom of the Election Commission and remain personally committed to ensure that such situations do not arise.”

British MP Vaz under EC scanner
Panaji: Election Commission is seeking views of experts on a recent public rally addressed by British MP of Indian origin, Keith Vaz, at Varca in South Goa. Since Vaz is a public representative from a foreign country, EC officials are studying the rule book to take a stand on the issue. The MP had addressed a public meeting of the Congress candidate Valanka Alemao on February 12 ahead of the polls.

New Delhi: The Election Commission has modified the model code of conduct in the states of Manipur, Punjab and Uttrakhand, where polling has been completed. The Commission has allowed tours of ministers to districts along with officers to review the implementation of developmental programmes.

Sultanpur: Separate FIRs have been registered against a BSP minister and a Peace Party candidate for alleged violation of model code of conduct, official sources said here on Tuesday.
