A Havaldar opened fire in a police station and shot dead his colleague in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said today.

N Laxman, attached to Bhadrakali police station in the Naxal-hit district, who was upset over some issue, opened fire from his AK-47 rifle last evening. When Constable Mahesh Kumar Dhruv tried to stop him, Laxman shot him, Bijapur superintendent of police Avinash Mohanti said.

Dhruv later died of gunshot wounds, he said.

Laxman fled from the spot after the incident, but he was later arrested, Mohanti said, adding he was being questioned.

The reason behind Laxman's action was not yet known but police suspect he was tense and under influence of liquor, police officials said.
