Police use batons on protesting teachers across Uttar Pradesh

Scores of 'shiksha mitras' were injured as police used batons to disperse the ad-hoc teachers who took to streets in different parts of Uttar Pradesh to press for benefits similar to permanent employees.

Over 35 shiksha mitras were arrested as they blocked rail traffic at a number of places and indulged in brick batting in protests on the eve of the Teachers Day, police said.

In Etawah, the teachers who were demanding 'equal pay for equal work' blocked rail tracks at Farukkhabad crossing and when police attempted to remove them they indulged in brick batting in which several people were injured, they said.

Additional superintendent of police Manoj Sonker said that 29 protesters, including 14 women, were arrested.

In Bareilly, police used force when protesters attempted to block train traffic at the railway station.

Nearly 12 people were injured in the incident, officials said adding that eight siksha mitra were taken into custody.

Police used batons to disperse protesters in Deoria district. Some persons, including policemen, were injured in the clashes, they said.
