If you dread taking a taxi in the city for fear of reckless driving, here is some good news. The Ahmedabad city traffic department will impart training to taxi drivers, autorickshaw drivers and other private drivers as a part of the road safety week that is to be held between January 1 and 7.

The programme will be held in accordance with the directives of the ministry of road, transport and highways. The ministry has placed suggestions before the concerned authorities to manage traffic systems effectively, to ensure that the public transport system is optimally used and maintain road infrastructure.

Traffic department officials have worked out a plan for road safety week. While the programme will begin with a rally which will be flagged off from Income Tax crossroads to the Children's Park, it will end with a public meeting. A traffic official said, "It is a week-long programme meant to inculcate a sense of traffic awareness among people. A rough plan has been drawn out for the same."

Sharing details of the programme, DCP (traffic) MM Anarwala told DNA, "The programme will start off with a rally. The week will include several events such as a blood donation camp, an eye testing camp for police drivers and creating traffic awareness among schools." Officials said the idea of the programme was to create traffic awareness among people. In fact, officials will also be checking back lights and reflectors of vehicles at major routes such as the SG highway and Narol expressway.

A large number of schools in the city will also be covered as part of the road safety week. Anarwala said, "A sub-inspector will impart training at one school as part of the programme. We aim to cover 300 schools over a period of one week in a bid to create awareness."
