Dinesh Kalgi, the Gujarat bookie alleged to have a network extending to Pakistan, presented himself on Monday before the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB). Kalgi has secured an anticipatory bail from the sessions court a few days back.
According to procedure, Kalgi was technically arrested and immediately granted bail by the police because he had already secured anticipatory bail. On Tuesday, the DCB would be seeking the court’s permission to take Kalgi on remand for 14 days. While he was at the DCB on Monday, the police recorded Kalgi’s statement. Sources said Kalgi had denied all allegations about his association with other bookies in the country. After his statement had been recorded, Kalgi was allowed to go.
Police inspector, DCB, PD Vaghela, told DNA that Kalgi’s links with bookies in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia would be thoroughly probed if the court granted the police request for his remand. “His direct or indirect links with bookies abroad will be investigated and, for that, we will seek his remand for 14 days,” Vaghela said.
Another source in the crime branch said Kalgi will be quizzed about his network, his associates, his turnover and his business partners. The source said Kalgi had a large network of bookies which had been earlier probed for its Pakistan and Saudi Arabia links. “We will investigate to find out the relationship between these bookies and Kalgi,” the source said.
Kalgi was wanted in connection with a satta case after his alleged associates were arrested from Satellite area of Ahmedabad city. Some of his associates had talked to people in Pakistan in connection with setta betting. He, however, could not be arrested as he was absconding. He later secured an anticipatory bail from the Sessions court.
