Abdul Rehman, police inspector of Pratapnagar police station in Udaipur, Rajasthan, was aware that Sohrabuddin Sheikh had been picked up by the Gujarat police, three days before the gangster was killed in a staged encounter on November 26, 2005.

Despite this, Rehman had lodged a complaint against Sohrabuddin with the Gujarat anti-terrorist squad (ATS) after the gangster had been killed in a fake encounter. He had declared in the complaint that they had received 'confidential information' that Sohrabuddin was on way to Ahmedabad via Surat to kill some big leaders.

Majid Mohammad, brother of the slain gangster Hamid Lala of Udaipur, had recorded a statement before the CBI that Rehman had come to his restaurant two or three days before Sohrabuddin was killed. The police inspector had told him that his brother's killer, Sohrabuddin, had been picked up by the Gujarat police from Hyderabad. Hamid Lala, a criminal who extorted protection money from marble traders, was allegedly killed by Sohrabuddin and his associates Tulsi, Azam, Rafique alias Bunty, and Sylvester.

According to the Udaipur police, Sohrabuddin had eliminated Lala because he wanted to establish his domination in the local underworld and extort money from marble traders. All the accused in the Hamid Lala case, however, were acquitted in 2009 when the case against Sohrabuddin and Tulsi was dropped because they were dead by then.

Majid runs a restaurant named, Rehmani Hotel, in the Chamanpura area of Udaipur. Majid told the CBI that though Abdul Rehman was the police inspector of Pratapnagar police station, he was investigating the Hamid Lala murder case which was registered at Hathipole police station.

He further stated that Rehman used come to his restaurant to have food. Two or three days before Sohrabuddin was killed, Rehman had come to his hotel and was in a great hurry. He told Majid that the Gujarat police had arrested Sohrabuddin from near Hyderabad and they (Rehman and his men) were going with their SP to get Sohrabuddin from the Gujarat police.

Sohrabuddin's associates (Rafique and others) who were lodged in Udaipur jail in connection with the Hamid Lala murder case, got to know of this immediately as Majid had revealed the fact to Rafique's brother-in-law who lived near him. When Sohrabuddin was killed in an encounter, Majid and his family had fired crackers in their colony to celebrate the murder of their brother's killer.
