Police inspector VM Jani, who is accused of letting a bootlegger go scot-free after accepting a bribe of Rs20 lakh from him, surrendered on Monday. Jani who had been absconding, surrendered before assistant commissioner of police, 'B' Division NC Patel at around 5 pm. Jani surrendered after his anticipatory bail was rejected by the court. The police suspect more police officials to be involved in the bribery.

Jani had been absconding since February 5, 2011. An official complaint was filed against him by the deputy commissioner of police, zone 4 when it was disclosed that Jani had accepted Rs20 lakh as bribe and had allowed a bootlegger to go free from Dariapur in November 2010.

The case was initially investigated by ACP, F division, MV Mehta. However, later on the investigation was handed over to NC Patel. Patel confirmed about Jani's arrest and said that the police will investigate the accusations against him.  "We are investigating whether other officers are also involved in this case. We are also trying to get the details of the money being transferred to Jani," Patel said. Police sources said that Jani let infamous bootlegger Naagdan Gadhvi to go scot-free even though he knew that Gadhvi was wanted for serious offences like kidnapping.

Jani's name was found in Gadhvi's laptop, wherein the police discovered the details of the money transactions between Jani and the bootlegger. The sources also said that more police officials may be involved in the case.

A police team had raided Jani's house in Pragatinagar, Naranpura few days ago, however they found Jani along with his family to be absconding.
