The Surat police are having a hard time finding the other victims of the trio, who committed gang-rape on a teenage schoolgirl last Friday. Police say that the victims or their family members are unwilling to come forward on account of social stigma achieved with rape.

Apart from video shooting of the schoolgirl's gang-rape, the police have allegedly recovered seven recordings of other similar rapes from the mobile phone found from the rapists at the time of their arrest.

The police suspect that some of these recordings are of earlier victims of the rapist trio. Acting on one such lead, a crime branch team went to Sayan in Surat district to the residence of a suspected victim of the rapists.

However, the girl, who was a student of MTB Arts College, Surat, and her family members refused to say anything to the police officials. They also refused to speak about the alleged crime, much to the disappointment of the police. The police had to manage by speaking with two of the girl's friends, but even they could not provide much of a help, said sources.

The police, meanwhile, have intensified the hunt for other victims of the rapist trio.

“We are taking all steps to find other girls who may have been victimised by the accused in the past,” a police official connected with the gang-rape case, said.

However, the official admitted that finding other victims would be difficult.

“If it is some other crime, say loot or fraud, the victims approach police on their own. But, there is a lot of social stigma attached to rape cases, which is why victims or their family members are not keen on coming forward,” the official said.

Shahid Saiyed, Tariq Saiyed and Abu Bacher Shaikh were arrested on Friday, a few hours after they committed gang-rape of a schoolgirl. They abducted the girl in the wee hours of the day and committed the heinous crime in a moving car. However, instead of keeping quiet, the girl and her family lodged a police complaint against the trio. Shahid and Tariq are sons of policemen.

The rapist trio is presently in police custody. The police claim they have enough evidence against the rapists to prove their guilt, even as Surtis are demanding a swift trial to punish the trio.
