Seven bullets were recovered from Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla stadium barely two hours before the second one-day international between India and Australia on Saturday.

The police said that the bullets were recovered during an anti-sabotage and sanitising operation at the stadium. “We found the cartridges wrapped in a piece of paper in a second floor bathroom. The stadium can accommodate 40,000 people; the bullets have a range of 15 feet. The issue is serious,” said a senior police officer.

A case has been registered under the Arms Act. The police is trying to ascertain how the bullets reached the stadium and for how long they were there. “We have made a list of the people who work at and those who have access to the stadium. We are not ruling out anybody,” the officer said. “There are many possibilities. The bullets could have been used to fire blindly at people to cause a stampede or they were kept there a long time ago with the intention of hiding them. So, we are working on all possible angles.”

The police said the matter was disclosed late as they did not want to create “unnecessary disturbance” during the match. “We kept the case under wraps during the match. We did not want panic to be caused. We scanned the entire stadium again after finding the bullets and allowed the match to take place.”
