The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) faced a crisis on Thursday when the civic administration went without a senior officer. Acting additional municipal commissioner MS Deonikar went on leave.

This forced acting municipal commissioner, Dilip Band, to ask the other acting additional municipal commissioner, Naresh Zurmure, to cancel his leave and report to duty immediately. Zurmure had gone on leave a few days ago till May 9.

When municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade went on a mid-career training for eight weeks on April 17, the charge of his post was handed over to divisional commissioner Dilip Band. Two posts of additional municipal commissioners are vacant and the charge of one of them is handed over to garden superintendent Naresh Zurmure, an Indian Forest Service officer.
The charge of another post of additional commissioner is with MS Deonikar, commissioner of the

National Horticulture Mission. Earlier, Deonikar was the additional municipal commissioner, but when he was transferred to the new post, he was holding his  earlier position as an
additional charge.

Leader of the opposition Aba Bagul and chairman of the city improvement committee, Arun Dhimdhime, told media persons that when they visited the office of Deonikar, they were told that he had proceeded on leave without handing over charge to any other officer in the PMC.

They said they would complain to the chief minister and chief secretary about Deonikar and ask for action against him.
They said that while Band is not attending meetings of the civic body, both the posts of additional municipal commissioners are vacant and many department heads have gone on leave. In case of an emergency, there would be no senior officer to take decisions. “We demand a full-time municipal commissioner in the PMC,” they said.

The PMC has a holiday on Friday on account of Akshayya Tritiya. Citizens would be able to pay property tax from 10 am to 2 pm in the regional ward offices and the main building.
