Congress on Friday night said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's invitation to the Pakistan President and Prime Minister to watch the Indo-Pak World Cup cricket semifinal at Mohali next week was reflective of India's "holistic" approach towards friendly relations with that country.

"India has always been desirous of friendly relations with Pakistan. Yet, we have been very firm and realistic about what we expect in return. The latest overture is yet another expression of this holistic approach," Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwary said.

In identical letters to President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, Singh said he proposed to watch the Indo-Pak World Cup semi-final and "it gives me a great pleasure" to invite them to watch the match.

Singh's cricket diplomacy will be the first major bilateral event at the summit level between the two sides either in India or Pakistan since Mumbai terror attacks of 2008 when relations between the two countries had plunged to a new low.
