Probably for the first time in the history of the planning commission, the nation's official think tank today organised special screening Peepli Live, a satire on farmers' suicide and inefficiency of development programmes, for its senior bureaucrats and planners.

"Since the film talks about the perception of people on the development programmes and so on, we thought that this will be quite useful for the planning commission officers to see the film," planning commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia told reporters after screening of the film in Yojana Bhawan.

The film, which was even seen by prime minister Manmohan Singh last month, is a political satire based on the farmers' suicides, approach of bureaucrats and superfluous approach of electronic and print media.

Talking about the special screening of the film, Montek also said that this kind of initiatives should be useful for the Plan panel experts to see the sort of impression people have about the development schemes.

"May be, it will help them to think on what actually goes on and on how they can make things better," Ahluwalia added.

The initiative comes at a time, when the commission has started formulation of the draft Approach Paper of the 12th five year plan (2012-17). The plan document, which will eventually be approved by the National Development Council (NDC), the highest policy making body of the country, is based on the guidelines provided in the Approach Paper.

"We were not looking for answers (of the questions posed by the film)... They will keep coming gradually. All we wanted that people should react and think about the plight of common man," said director of the film Anusha Rizvi, who was present at the special screening.

Besides Ahluwalia, member secretary Sudha Pillai, members Arun Maira, Sayeeda Hamid and other senior officials of the commission were also present at the special screening.
