West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday handed compensation cheques to families of fishermen, who came under attack from Bangladeshi pirates on Friday in the Bay of Bengal.

During her visit to the Sunderbans, Banerjee handed over cheques of Rs two lakh to families of those killed.

While those suffering serious injuries were given cheques of Rs50,000 each, the fishermen with minor injuries got cheques worth Rs25,000 each.

"Efforts are being made to rescue those kidnapped by the pirates," the chief minister told a rally here.

Two gangs of Bangladeshi pirates had killed four Indian fishermen, injured eight others and hijacked a trawler with twelve fishermen on board in the Bay of Bengal on January 27.
