Peace returns to Shahpur and vicinity

Police seize 11 bags of stones, 82 cloth rags and 31 bottle bombs during combing operations.

The continuous patrolling by local police, flag march by Rapid Action Force, meetings with the community leaders, arrest of rioters and heavy combing in pols of Shahpur and Kalupur have finally helped bring peace to the area.

The area had witnessed five days of rioting and unrest. Life slowly limped back to normalcy in Shahpur and other parts of the city on Friday. Joint commissioner of police, sector 1, Satish Sharma told DNA that the police conducted heavy combing in several areas and seized many weapons and articles that were used in the rioting.

The police seized 11 bags full of stones, 82 cloth rags, 31 bottle bombs, 65 glass bottles, a knife, empty bottles, 20 kg of cloth scrap, 15 kg of thread and kerosene among others.

Police inspector, Shahpur police station, MB Nayak told DNA that the combing was done in almost all the pols that saw severe violence. Following the combing operation some people have been detained.

Similarly, in a late night operation by Kalupur police in many pols hand-made bombs were found from some residents of Dhana Suthar Ni Pol. 

"The hand-made bombs used in riots were found from the pol and we have arrested some people in this connection," police inspector, Kalupur police station, RK Kumbharvadiya told DNA.

The police also held meetings with members of the peace committees of the areas and also appealed to community leaders to lend help in ensuring no violence takes place. "We have decided on a compromise formula for both the communities and the respective leaders are appealing to their people to maintain peace," a source told DNA.

Apart from this, senior IPS officers from other districts have also been called for patrolling in the area. No untoward incident was reported in the city on Friday.
